Why I Started A Veterans Peace Foundation

James Henley shares the military experience and personal motivation behind A Veterans Peace Foundation.

I served in the United States Army from 1988 to 1996. One of the things I valued most was the camaraderie: being around people who understood service and the importance of looking out for one another. That sense of connection is part of what I want to carry forward through A Veterans Peace Foundation.

My own experience trying to navigate the VA disability claims process helped shape the foundation's purpose. I know what it feels like to have questions and struggle to figure out the next step. Finding information is one challenge. Understanding what applies to your situation can be another.

I started A Veterans Peace Foundation because I wanted to help other veterans feel less lost and more connected to support. Here in Wichita, that begins with listening to what someone needs and helping them find a direction. A conversation can be the starting point for identifying resources, understanding available options, or finding the right organization to contact.

Our work also includes practical help through lawn care. Sometimes supporting another veteran means helping with a yard that needs attention. I have purchased equipment myself to keep that work moving, and contributions from Wagon Masters have helped us buy seeds. Those are concrete examples of how personal effort and local support contribute to the foundation's work.

Housing is another part of our longer-term vision. I want to develop transitional housing for veterans in Wichita. That remains a goal we are working toward; the foundation does not currently operate a transitional home. Being clear about where we are today matters as we build toward what comes next.

We are also developing A Veterans Peace Podcast as another way to share experiences and discuss life after service. The purpose is the same: honest conversation, connection, and help finding a next step.

A Veterans Peace Foundation is growing from these real experiences and efforts. My hope is that veterans who find us will see a place to begin a conversation, and that neighbors who want to help will see opportunities to support that work.
