When Asking for Help Is the Hardest Step

You can be used to showing up for everyone else and still find it difficult to say, “I need a hand.” For some veterans, making that first call or sending that first message can feel harder than the problem itself.

Maybe you worry about being judged. Maybe you think someone else needs the help more. Or maybe you are simply worn out from trying to explain your situation. Whatever is holding you back, you do not need a perfect explanation to start a conversation.

You do not have to wait until everything falls apart

A question about housing, work, benefits, or community support is enough reason to reach out. You do not have to measure your situation against another veteran’s experience or prove that you have tried every possible solution.

Getting information early can help you understand your options. Even if you are unsure what kind of support you need, you can begin with what is happening today.

Start with one thing

When several problems pile up, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Choose the concern that feels most pressing. You might say:

  • “I am worried about keeping my housing and need to know where to start.”
  • “I am looking for work and could use help finding resources.”
  • “I have questions about benefits, but I do not know who to ask.”
  • “I could use a connection with other veterans.”

You can write your sentence down before calling or use it in a message. You do not have to tell your whole story at once. Share what you feel comfortable sharing, and ask what information is needed for the next step.

Let someone help you sort out the next step

Support can begin with a conversation, a resource connection, or help figuring out which organization to contact. A useful question is, “What is one thing I can do next?”

Before ending the conversation, write down the contact person, any documents requested, and what you should do next. If a resource does not fit your situation, ask whether there is another place to try. A referral that does not work out does not mean you were wrong to ask.

A place to begin in Wichita

A Veterans Peace Foundation is a veteran-led organization focused on connection and practical support for Wichita-area veterans. Our work includes helping veterans connect with housing, employment, benefits resources, and community support. What is available will depend on your needs and the resources available.

If you are unsure where to start, visit our Get Support page and tell us a little about what you need. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

You have spent time showing up for others. You deserve people in your corner, too. Take one next step. Let a conversation be the beginning.
